Dipteryx odorata, popularly known as "tonka bean" or "fava tonka", is a tree species native to the Amazon region. O fava tonka is a tree species native to the Amazon, belonging to the genus Dipteryx, the most famous of which is Dipteryx odorata. Its seeds, popularly called "fava tonka bean " or "tonka bean", have a high commercial value due to their rich content of coumarin, a natural compound responsible for their striking aroma and multiple industrial applications.
Due to these properties, fava tonka is widely used in the food, perfume and cosmetics industries, as well as being valued in traditional Amazonian knowledge, where it is associated with the relief of ulcers, infections, respiratory and heart diseases, and even popularly recognized for its aphrodisiac potential.
Rich in antioxidants, fiber, minerals and vitamins (especially C and B-complex), fava tonka also has anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce fluid retention and increase energy naturally.
According to the study described in the book Espécies Arbóreas Brasileiras - Volume 3: fava tonka, by Paulo Ernani Carvalho, the seeds of fava tonka contain 30% to 40% aromatic essential oil (by dry weight), light yellow in color and with an intense aroma, widely used by the perfumery and cosmetics industry (BERG, 1982; SOUSA et al., 1991; SANTOS, 2002). This oil is also used as a natural fixative in high-end fragrances, such as in well-known high-end perfumes like Channel.
